Counsel's Fees for Legal Services
Leamington Spa Chambers
What Are Our Barristers’ Charges?
Our Barristers' Fees
Our barristers (also called counsel) charge fees for their legal services. Each barrister has a different charging structure according to their specialisation and expertise.
Charges are in hourly rates, fixed fees for a particular piece of work, of a global fee for a significant piece of work.
Private Fees
Much of a barrister’s legal services work is charged on a private fee paying basis. However, a number of our barristers do work under legal aid provisions (see below).
Subject to professional conduct provisions, a barrister is entitled to decline to take on a privately paying case or to stop acting in a privately paid case where there is an issue about fees. Or where a professional embarrassment situation arises. Where a barrister has to withdraw from acting for a client, on professional embarrassment grounds, the barristers fees will usually remain payable.
Legal Aid
A client who wishes to rely on legal aid will need to approach a solicitor with a legal aid franchise. We can introduce clients to solicitors who hold legal aid franchises.
Legal aid does not exist for all areas of law.
Legal aid is frequently means tested and will often require a client to make contributions on a monthly basis.
A barrister is not obligated to take on a case on legal aid.
